In manga the recognizable published style is very distinctive because
emphasis is often placed on line (see "Evangelion", etc.) over form.
The storytelling differs from western comics like Glory or Captain marvel and
pages are typically read from right to left (it's traditional Japanese writing).

The Japanese drawing style used in anime is counter productive to such cartoon animations as Hex comics or Rai comics,
having far too many details and making it difficult to keep the number of drawings
comparable to other cartoons with design ethics that stress simplicity.

While the Japanese art can be realistic, it is often noted that the characters have large eyes like Pokemon,
tiny noses (c.e. of Rurouni Kenshin) and mouths.
Since the 1960s Osamu Tezuka started drawing eyes in this way in manga, mimicking the style of Disney cartoons.

Osamu Tezuka adapted and simplified many from Disney animation and original Comic Art
to reduce the number of movies frames in the production,
though it should be noted that Disney films and cartoons made in the west are not anime.

A set of Japanese cartoon characters may build relationships, jobs, etc. in one set of stories only to have another story set run
where the same characters do not know each other (compare Bleach, Naruto vs. Neon Genesis anime).
|
|
Anime studios used to draw as little new animation as possible,
using repeating backgrounds (see online gallery of Naruto or Bleach anime),
and dialogue which involves only animating mouths like Captain America Comics while the rest of the screen
remains absolutely still.

Spawn manga has long had an influence on international comics and animation the world over.
American alternative comics artists such as Frank Miller and Scott McCloud were somewhat influenced by manga in a few of their works
(you can compare western Captain marvel comics and Evangelion anime).

|
There are often published scenes where the frame rate of the animation far exceeds the quality (e.g. Manga Girls).
These are referred to as "money shots" outside of Japan, where more effort is put into the animation of one scene to give it
emphasis over the rest of the work.

In France there is a "Nouvelle Manga" movement started by Frederic Boilet which seeks to combine mature sophisticated daily
life Japanese manga with the artistic style of traditional Franco-Belgian comics.
The movement also involves Japanese artists - so-called "Spawn Comics".

While different titles and different artists have their own unique anime comic styles,
many stylistic elements have become common.
But some examples of Neon Genesis Evangelion anime have become so common
that they are described as being definitive of anime in general.

There are many artists of original comic Art who are influenced by the manga style.
Many of these have their own small publishing houses, art gallery or manga shops. Some webcomics and webmanga in this Japanese style
have become very popular, but these artists are not yet recognized outside of the manga fans.

Some unique aspect of anime or manga not found in other commercial animation markets is the lack of a directoral system.
In most cartoon produced around the world animators are all forced to conform to a set style by the director.
